Dominant England take opening T20I ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part 1 ? February 9, 2013
England took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series after winning the opening game by 40 runs against New Zealand, played at the Eden Park, Auckland.
Having been inserted by Brendon McCullum, the Poms started brightly courtesy a quick fire knock from Luke Wright. The impetus was then provided by Eoin Morgan (46 off 26) and Jonny Bairstow (38) before Jos Butler carried forward his impressive form to notch up an unbeaten 32 off 16, as England posted a daunting 214. ?
The Black Caps also began strongly but ultimately were halted by the English bowlers, with skipper Stuart Broad claiming career-best figures of 4 for 24. Martin Guptill top scored with 44 for the home side.
Australian batsman, Shane Watson, says that he is confident of proving his mettle as a middle-order batsman during the upcoming Test series against India.
Watson?s current form has given the selection committee a major headache, after he scored a century and a fifty while opening the batting upon his return to the national team following injury during the ongoing home series against West Indies.
With him deciding to give up bowling for the time being, it is still undecided whether he will be considered as an opener or will occupy the middle-order position. Also with David Warner and Ed Cowan doing well as the opening pairing in the longer version, it is unlikely that the team will tinker a successful combination. Watson agrees with this fact, and is confident of filling the no.4 slot in the Test side; even it means greater exposure against the old ball.
"It certainly is different batting at No.4, 5 or 6 compared to opening," Watson said. "If that's what the selectors and the captain and coach see as the best opportunity for me to score runs then I'm certainly willing to take that on."
Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed that the Pakistan Super League has been postponed due to logistic issues.
The inaugural T20 franchise based tournament was scheduled to take place between March 26 and April 7 but will not go as planned as the organizers are seeking extra time to find more investors and foreign players to take part in the competition.
"The PCB management has decided to reschedule the event and move it to a period where there are fewer scheduling conflicts, and the stakeholders get enough time to develop their business plans," PSL managing director Salman Sarwar Butt said.
