Music Review: Scars & Stories, The Fray | the Beijinger Blog | Events ...

?

American alternative rock has always puzzled me as a genre. Sure, there are usually guitars and drums, but there?s also often a puber-phonic falsetto lead singer, a few too many slow numbers, and increasingly, a piano. Is it supposed to be an alternative to rock, or an amalgamation of both?

Alternative rock musicians, of course, tend to reject labels, but how would The Fray lead singer Isaac Slade respond if I asked him: ?What genre is The Fray?? Then again, I don?t suppose it matters when your legion of fans (mainly young women) can?t get enough of your albums.

Scars & Stories, released in February, is the third offering from the Coloradan quartet. Overall the album?s reception was mixed. But then it?s sensationally uncool to admit to liking American alternative rock if you work in the musical press. You?d be cold in the ground before a music reviewer revealed Train, Matchbox Twenty or Hoobastank to be among their favorite bands.

A criticism often leveled at The Fray is that they?re a tad too earnest, a theory they did little to crush on S&S by revealing that the album is about journeys actual, emotional, and metaphorical. But they?ve hit on a winning formula that has kept them consistently at the summit of US pop charts for the last seven years and S&S does little to stymie their flow.

Standout tracks: ?Heartbeat,? ?Munich,? ?The Fighter?
