Jade Wright: High fees don?t mean university is only for the rich

Low income students are eligible for generous bursaries and fee discounts

I love this time of year ?? seeing the graduands? nervously gather in their? caps and gowns around the? cathedrals? and the? Philharmonic Hall.

I was a real sceptic when it? came to the benefits of a university education.

After my A levels I went? straight to work, starting at? the BBC two weeks after my? eighteenth birthday.

I stayed for four years,? believing that there was? nothing that dusty old books? could teach me about how to? do my job.

So when I finally enrolled,? aged 22, as a fresher and moved into halls? of residence I was humbled to? find that the benefits of a? university education weren?t? about getting a job or? learning dry facts.

Living and studying with? people from all around the? world, I found out as much? about human nature as I did? about English literature.

Studying feminism and? Marxism in relation to books? helped me shape my own? beliefs about the rest of my? life.

I didn?t agree with? everything I was taught, but I? learnt to question my? assumptions and take on new? points of view.

It makes me really sad to? think that a lot of young? people are put off applying? for a place at university now? because the fees are so? staggeringly high.

There have been a lot of? confusing messages that? have scared people off going? to university, but actually? low income students are? eligible for the most? generous bursaries? and fee? discounts.

Even those? colossal loans are? manageable when you think? that graduates only? pay? anything back once they are? earning a reasonable? amount.

Students? starting their? courses in? September? will only? start? paying? back? loans? when? their? salaries? exceed? ?21,000? a year.? If they earn less than that? they don?t pay a penny and if? they earn a lot more they? won?t miss it.

Only those graduates? among the top ten per cent of? earners will come close to? clearing their debt ? and the? rest will have their debts? written off after 30 years.

I wish that university was? free for everyone.

I think it gives people some? really good life skills as well? as the academic? qualifications.

Graduates of our? universities inform every? walk of life and profession.

But for as long as the? government fails to commit? to a system where education? is open to all, regardless of? income, then we have to get? the message out there that? university is an option even? for the poorest potential? students.

Because the ability to? think isn?t restricted by your? household income.

Not everyone will want to? go to university ? it is just one of many ways to add to your life experiences ? but? no-one should be put off by the fear of not being able to afford it.

As a society we are all? poorer when we only educate? those who were born with? money.
