150 youth to engage with environment, charity and humanity ...

Three days of volunteering activities on multiple locations around Doha had an ultimate goal of raising awareness about local social issues, promotion of active citizenship and community engagement, and developing sense of ownership for improving the society and serving its needs.

National Volunteer Weekend started on Thursday 9th of May with beach clean up, organized with the support of Ministry of Environment.

Over forty youth equipped with necessary tools spent several hours cleaning up Al Wakra Beach. The big amount of collected trashed made participants to reflect on our habits in terms of environmental care and waste management.

Another environmental activity took place on Saturday 11th of May at Ras Laffan area, where over 50 youth were helping to conduct wildlife research about dhub with Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI).

A lot of human efforts are needed to find and mark dhub burrows, thereby the help of volunteers who found more than 50 burrows within only one hour is essential to make research effective.

Apart from environmental activities, participants of National Volunteer Weekend had a chance to tackle issues of humanity and health with help of Hamad Medical Corporation. Throughout three days, organized groups of youth visited children with special needs at Al Rumailah Hospital, spent time with elderly department patients at Al Rumailah Rehabilitation Center and got to know about the life of dialysis patients at Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Center.

Observing the consequences of diseases and communicating with patients, volunteers realized how important it is to take care of your own health and maintain healthy diet and active lifestyle.

Finally, every evening from 9th till 11th of May, volunteers were helping to collect in-kind donations at several compounds such as Al Wadi Compound, Al Faisaliya Gardens and Les Roses 1. Residents of compounds could give away old clothes, books, furniture, technique, toys and other belongings, which were collected with help of Qatar Charity and TAYF, In-kind Donations Programme. It was a great pleasure to see active participation of residents and their willingness to support others in need.

National Volunteer Weekend has finished with Closing Ceremony held in Aspire Dome on the 11th of May. During the closing all volunteers were rewarded with certificates, had some time to reflect on activities, which took place over three days, and brought up the most exiting memories once again.

National Volunteer weekend is set to be an annual initiative, organized by The Youth Company under its YOU in Action Programme, which promotes volunteer opportunities and social awareness campaigns.

The event was supported by Ministry of Environment, Qatar Charity, Tayf (In-kind Donations Programme), QEERI, Hamad Medical Corporation, Youth Enterprises, Commercial Bank, Aspire Zone, Nandos and Footwalkers Production.

"We were extremely honored to get trust of multiple government institutions and respected companies, who supported us in realization of National Volunteer Weekend," said Aya Abu Issa, Chief Executive Director of The Youth Company.

"It's great to realize that residents of Qatar truly care about the future of the country on different levels. And we are especially excited to have so much young people inspired and ready to devote their time and skills to make the world a better place to live in. We have no doubt that young generation got everything they need to build up the bright future on the right path, and we will be always there for support," she added.
