Assad, opposition cannot solve conflict by military means ? Syrian ...

In an interview with the Lebanese newspaper "Al-Akhbar" he said that the country needs a national unity government, which would have broad powers.

"We are not protecting some particular person or regime, we are fighting for the very existence of Syria," concluded al-Sharaa.

This is the Vice-President?s first statement for the past few months. Earlier, there were media reports that he had fled Syria. They were subsequently disproved.

Clashes in refugee camps in Syria

Palestinian refugee camps in Damascus and Aleppo have turned into sites of fierce clashes. The Al-Watan news agency reports shooting in the streets of the Yarmouk camp in the southern suburb of Damascus where armed extremist groups are fighting against the government troops supported by Palestinian self-defence units.

After the counterattack of the government forces near Aleppo militants were dislodged from the Handarat refugee camp.

A military source informed the SANA news agency that the media reports about the capture of the Hanano barracks in Aleppo were not true. At the same time, it became known that the Syrian troops have left the suburbs of Aleppo where fierce fighting took place.

Halt firing on Palestinian camps in Syria - Abbas

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas appealed on Sunday for an immediate halt to firing on Palestinian refugee camps in Syria, after air stikes on the Yarmuk camp in Damascus killed at least eight civilians.

"We call on the warring sides in Syria to spare the Palestinian people and their camps in Syria," he said in a statement carried by official Palestinian news agency WAFA, adding that bombardments of the refugee camps "must be stopped immediately."

Syrian Air Force attacks refugee camp in Damascus

About 30 people died as a result of the Syrian Air Force attack against the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in the south of Damascus, Reuters reports with reference to representatives of the opposition.

The Syrian Air Force fired at least two missiles at the camp, one of which hit a mosque where refugees were hiding, Reuters reports.

According to the agency, Palestinian refugees are involved in the conflict and take part in hostilities both on the side of the opposition and the government forces.

The conflict in Syria has been going on since March 2011 and, according to different sources, between 20,000 and 30,000 people have fallen victim of violence.

The Syrian authorities claim that they deal with the resistance of well-armed militants supported from abroad.

Air raid on Damascus Palestinian camp kills eight - NGO

Syrian warplanes killed at least eight civilians in an unprecedented air strike on a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Damascus on Sunday, said a monitoring group.

"The toll may rise, because several of the injured are in a critical condition," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Al-Watan daily reports the area erupted in violence Sunday as government troops clashed with opposition forces. The edition says Palestinian self-defense forces support pro-Assad fighters. Other sources insist Palestinians are divided over the conflict and can be found fighting on both sides.

Al-Yarmouk is the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Syria and is located in a strategic region to the South of Damascus, where government forces have been attempting to push back rebel fighters for the past couple of weeks. In August, there were reports that a mortat attack killed at least 20 people in a shopping area there.

Over 500,000 Palestinians live in Syria which has been going through a harsh civil conflict since March 2011.
