Supermoon: Why it's the best lunar show in the solar system

Supermoon peaked Sunday morning, but good viewing will continue for the next few days. The unusual relationship between Earth and the moon makes supermoon a particularly good show.

"Supermoon" officially arrived at about 7 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time Sunday morning, with the moon making its closest swing by Earth this year. About a half hour later, the moon reached full status, making it appear 12 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a regular full moon.

Don't worry if you missed it. The effect should still linger for a few nights, meaning Sunday, Monday, and even Tuesday should give a good sense of this year's supermoon.

And social media was alight with the event, with pictures of Saturday night's supermoon making an appearance from Facebook to Instagram.

The show is the product of a cosmic quirk. Since planets and moons orbit in ellipses, not circles, there are times when they are closer to what they're orbiting and times when they're farther away. For moons, the point when they're closest to their planet is called perigee, the point farthest away is called apogee.

For Earth and the moon, perigee and apogee happen once each month, since the moon orbits the Earth once every 27 days. But because of small inconsistencies in the orbits, the moon's closest approach and its farthest distance are always slightly different.

The moon hit its monthly perigee Sunday morning, but what makes it worthy of the name "supermoon" was that it was the closest perigee of 2013. Moreover, since it coincided almost perfectly with a full moon, the effect was enhanced.

The moon's farthest apogee this year has already happened and is set to repeat itself next year during the Jan. 15, 2014, full moon. To see the visual difference in size between a perigee and apogee moon, click here.?

But what makes the moon so special? If everything in the solar system orbits in an ellipsis, shouldn't we have a "supersun," too.

In fact, we do. Since we orbit the sun once a year, supersuns only happen once a year. Our closest swing to the sun, called perihelion, also already happened this year, and will happen again on Jan. 4, 2014. (An "un-supersun," when the sun seems smallest at aphelion, is just around the corner: July 5.)

But will there be this much buzz next January with sungazers filling Twitter with pictures of a gigantic sun? Don't count on it.

The reason? the sun is obviously much farther away from Earth than is the moon, so the effect is not so noticeable. For Earth, the distance between aphelion and perihelion is about 3 million miles. But even at perihelion, the Earth is still 91 million miles from the sun.?

In addition, Earth's orbit around the sun is more nearly circular than is the moon's orbit around us, with only Venus and Neptune having more circular orbits than Earth. Mercury has the most eccentric orbit ? ranging from a perihelion of 29 million miles to an aphelion of 43 million miles ? meaning it has a truly dramatic supersun (if you can stand the 800 degree Fahrenheit temperatures on the sun-side surface).

By contrast, the moon's orbit around Earth is the most elliptical orbit of any major moon in the solar system. Combine that with the fact that the moon is comparatively close to Earth, so it looks large in our skies, and supermoon earns its name.

Moldova urges int'l help to resolve border row

CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) ? Moldova's Parliament has called on international partners negotiating a settlement with a breakaway republic to stop separatists from seizing territory in eastern Moldova.

Lawmakers adopted a statement late Friday urging the U.S., the European Union, Russia, Ukraine and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to "resolve the situation in Trans-Dniester through political and peaceful means, respecting democratic...principles."

Trans-Dniester, wedged between Moldova and Ukraine, is a narrow strip of land separated by from the rest of Moldova by the River Dniester. Moldova was part of Romania until 1940 when it was annexed to the Soviet Union, but Trans-Dniester was never part of Romania.

Trans-Dniester broke away from Moldova in 1990 because of fears that Moldova planned to reunite with neighboring Romania. A war broke out in 1992, leaving 1,500 dead. In 2005, the EU and the U.S. joined Ukraine and Russia as negotiators to seek a solution for the situation.

Last week separatist leader Yevgeny Shevchuk signed legislation that would expand the region to include eight Moldovan villages, saying he would do everything possible to make sure the legislation came into effect.

Moldovan Defense Minister Vitalie Marinuta said the army would respond to any attack on its territory, adding he did not think the situation would escalate into an armed conflict. Trans-Dniester is not recognized internationally but is supported by Russia.

Russia opposes Moldova signing an association agreement with the EU in November, and Moldovan analysts say Moscow is seeking to destabilize the situation in one of Europe's poorest countries.

4 shot at NC law firm, Wal-Mart; suspect caught

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) ? A man armed with a shotgun shot one person outside a North Carolina law firm Friday before darting across a busy street and wounding three others outside a Wal-Mart before officers subdued him, police said.

Officers confronted the man outside the store and caught up with him behind a nearby Toys "R'' Us. He fired at them and they shot multiple rounds back, wounding the gunman, said Greenville Police Chief Hassan Aden. The suspect was expected to survive as well as the four others he's accused of shooting, Aden said.

The gunman's first target was seated in his car outside the Kellum Law Firm on the city's south side, Aden said at a news conference. The firm's main office in New Bern declined comment. Kellum has nine personal injury offices in the eastern part of the state.

The suspect crossed five lanes of traffic after the Kellum shooting and injured the three others before he was caught, Aden said. Police are still trying to determine the shooter's identity and motive. He is in police custody at a local hospital, Aden said.

The victims are all in operating rooms at local hospitals, Aden said. He didn't give specifics on their conditions or their names and ages.

The shooter was using a "pistol-grip shotgun" with an unknown number of rounds, Aden said. He had a bag filled with ammunition, Aden said.

"He had enough to really do some significant damage," the chief said.

Aden said police are still sifting through video footage of the scene.

Greenville is about 85 miles east of Raleigh.

Ween: Where'd the Cheese Go?

Earlier today I found myself searching for my keys and?lo and behold?a certain song popped into my head. And what a wonderful tune it is. Both versions.

Ween's no stranger to weirdness for it's own sake, but in this case, there's a little story behind it. In short: Ween was commissioned to make music for a Pizza Hut ad, and submitted the first version (and some other, unrelated songs) for the first run. When all were rejected, Ween opted for a second?and righteously more explicit?version.

Pizza Hut-approved or not, both versions are fantastic classics, and the go-to tune for humming whenever your cheese or one-syllable-thing-that-rhymes-with-cheese goes missing. Enjoy, and may your cheese never go missing. [Spotify, Amazon, iTunes]

4 shot, 3 dead in Ky. condominium complex shooting

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? A domestic situation apparently prompted the midweek shooting at a condominium complex in an upscale Louisville neighborhood that claimed three lives and left a fourth person badly wounded, police said.

Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell identified the dead from the shooting Wednesday afternoon as a girl, a 38-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man. He didn't release their names nor disclose a possible motive in the hours after the shooting.

He added that a woman in her 60s was hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting at the Lakeview Condominum complex located near a neighborhood of upper middle class homes in Louisville is being investigated by a homicide unit, Mitchell said.

He said the suspect apparently was among the dead and police don't think anyone was "on the loose." He didn't identify the suspect but said police had gathered evidence and were interviewing witnesses.

The University of Louisville Hospital, contacted by The Associated Press early Thursday, said it could not release any information on the woman's condition until she was identified by name.

Mitchell said the shootings took place inside a residence but he declined to say whether there were other people inside at the time.

The Lakeview Condominiums complex lies in a neighborhood filled with upper-middle-class homes with manicured lawns.

About two hours after the shootings, a man and a woman who was crying went to the area cordoned off by police. They didn't speak to reporters but crossed the police tape and talked briefly to an officer before being escorted back to their vehicle to leave.

About a half-hour later, a different pair came and also spoke to police, the woman visibly shaken and weeping, before being walked back to their vehicle and driving off.

Molly Hoekstra said she has lived in the complex for nearly two years. She returned home Wednesday to find the building blocked off by police tape.

"It's always been really safe and neighborly," she said of the community, adding she was shaken up and would spend the night with relatives.

Alexa Hall, a resident, told The Courier-Journal newspaper ( http://cjky.it/104yWAC ) of Louisville that she was at the complex's pool when a man and a boy came running, shouting that shots had been fired. They urged someone to call police, according to the newspaper.

She described a scene of panic and confusion soon after the shooting.

"Nobody really knew what to do," she said, adding people stood by watching as police arrived.
