LastPass Premium Password Manager (for Android)

It's hard to believe something as utilitarian as a password manager has its diehard fans, but LastPass, our Editors' Choice winner for both free and premium ($1/month, direct) password managers, enjoys something of a cult following. Converts like myself swear by this tool?a Web service that securely stores passwords and login information, and automatically fills them in for you as you browse online.

LastPass Password Manager Premium (for Android) is only available to Premium subscribers, and lets you access your vault of saved logins and other login data on the go. It works with a built in browser based on the stock Android browser. However, the app is pretty unintuitive?if this app is your only incentive to upgrade to Premium, you'll want to reconsider. You can also give it a test drive for 14 days.

Getting Started
As a LastPass n00b, I had a rather difficult time getting started. When I first opened the app I saw a plain white page with an input box and the word "search" at the top. It turns out the search box was for searching saved logins and forms, but this assumes you've already set up LastPass. I found this odd?usually an app has a wizard or at least a step-by-step manual, especially for a relatively unintuitive service.

Finally I took the advice of a LastPass spokesperson and logged into my LastPass account through my desktop browser to get things started. Because this is a cloud-based service, LastPass quickly syncs your account information across both platforms.

LastPass centers on your Vault?a list of saved logins, notes, and other login details. You can add new information any time by filling in templates (called "Form Fill" profiles) and organize them into folders like you would with bookmarks.

The app does include some gems from the desktop-based service. Secure Notes lets you securely store alphanumeric notes?like a Social Security Number?and access them later through your Vault interface. You can enter templates with common login information, like your name and address and auto-complete this information when you encounter such a template. You'll also find a password generator that creates strong passwords for new online accounts.

A neat, mobile-only feature is the ability to use LastPass to log into your apps (though you won't find this information in LastPass' user manual!). Simply tap an input field to open the virtual keyboard, and then tap the LastPass icon (an asterisk). This auto-fills data for you.

The LastPass Browser Experience
When you use LastPass in a desktop browser, the service prompts you to save any new logins or accounts with LastPass. Furthermore, you'll find simple dropdown menus in your toolbar that make it even faster to grab data from various saved forms to complete online forms.

No such luxuries in the app. LastPass for Android lacks all the convenient prompts of its desktop sibling, and you're forced to use an impossibly clunky built-in browser to experience LastPass' auto-filling and login saving.

The LastPass browser is only accessible from within the password-protected app. It's tedious to use unless you're working in a tablet that's hooked up to a keyboard (in other words, a laptop). You tap into your Vault to launch saved websites with saved login information. You tap a couple times to enter a new website, and tap again to fill out a form that saves your login information.

Auto-filling only worked sporadically. The browser doesn't support Flash or geolocation services. Furthermore some mobile sites, like banking sites, don't even let you auto-fill information. I couldn't use this with my Chase account, for instance. It's just the way banks code their mobile websites, and you'll encounter the same problem in your stock browser. The safest workaround is to download your bank's app and use LastPass to log in.

Lastly, LastPass forces you to log in every time you want to use the app, and hence, the browser. I understand the security reasons behind this, and I know it's just one extra tap, or more if you didn't save your master password, but on a mobile device these extra taps feels like running extra miles. LastPass also offered a free plugin for third-party browsers like Dolphin HD and Firefox Mobile, although they're as tedious to use as the browser.

Needs Another Pass
LastPass for Android is a decent app for the security conscious, and you can't beat free, but at the moment it's far too unintuitive for the average user. This isn't reason enough to upgrade to Premium?yet. It isn't intuitive, and it lacks the awesome bells and whistles that make the desktop-based service an Editors' Choice for both free and paid password managers. LastPass will need to rethink its mobile app before it loses out to young, innovative players like Dashlane. mSecure Password Manager ($19.95/year, 2 stars) also offers an Android app for an additional $9.99, though I haven't yet tested it. RoboForm, 1Password. KeyPass, and others also provide mobile password managers.

Masked group attacks alleged white supremacists

By Sevil Omer, msnbc.com

A group of masked radicals is accused of brutally attacking alleged white supremacists eating lunch at a restaurant?in a suburb of Chicago, and the town?s mayor is calling the melee a bizarre and bloody spillover of the NATO Summit.

Tinley Park?Mayor Edward J.?Zabrocki said as many as 18 people wearing masks and black hoods stormed into the Ashford House in Tinley Park on Saturday,?pummeling a group of alleged white supremacists who had gathered at the Irish-American eatery known for its?corned beef and bacon.

Zabrocki said he believed the group of assailants had come into town from Indiana to participate in the protests at the NATO Summit, but instead headed to?his town?to pick a?fight. Tinley Park is about 30 miles southwest of Chicago.??

?This was a real riot,? Zabrocki told msnbc.com on Monday. ?These guys started beating the crap out of the other group. A lot of tables were knocked over, dishes were broken and there was food all over the walls. It was terrible. It was a mess.?

Zabrocki said five members of the group were arrested; 13 others were still being sought.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer said five men were charged with aggravated battery, mob action and criminal damage to property. The group included three brothers, Jason W. Sutherlin, 33, of Gosport, Ind.; Cody Lee Edward Sutherlin, 23, of Bloomington, Ind.; and Dylan James Sutherlin, 20, also of of Bloomington. Alex R. Stuck, 22, of Bloomington, and James S. Tucker, 26, of Spencer, Ind.,?were also charged, the Tribune reported.

Nine people were injured and three people were hospitalized, Zabrocki said. He said victims' conditions had improved since the attacks.

The mayor said he believed the victims had ties to white supremacist groups, but he could not confirm?their affiliation.

Zabrocki said the Anti-Racist Action, an organization?that says it protests "fascist and neo-Nazi activities," claimed responsibility and posted its reasoning on its website.?

According to the Anti-Racist Action website:

?On Saturday, May 19th a group of 30 anti-fascists descended upon Ashford House restaurant in the Chicago suburb of Tinley Park where the 5th annual White Nationalist Economic Summit and Illinois White Nationalist Meet-and-Greet was taking place. The White Nationalists were targeted inside the restaurant and physically attacked, causing several injuries and completely shutting down their meeting.?

Zabrocki said city and police officials had been on alert on?Saturday and Sunday?because of demonstrations at the NATO Summit in Chicago. He said quick action?by police?helped law enforcement collar at least five of the suspects.

?We believe that the same group of attackers had been in town for the summit and if they had not been in town, they wouldn't have found this group,? he said.

'Walloped'
Michael Winston, owner of the Ashford House, said the group that was attacked had made a reservation for up to 20, saying they were from an Irish heritage association.

"We had no idea who these people were," Winston said. "We don?t ask for people?s political stuff when they come in the door. Did they look like white supremacists? One or two did, but just because they have a shaved head doesn?t mean they?re a skinhead, right? I know a lot of good-looking guys who have their heads shaved and they aren?t skinheads or white supremacists. And the group that stormed in, it was too fast and too late. It took us by surprise.

?The other group marched into the restaurant, all were in hooded sweatshirts,? Winston told msnbc.com. ?Each had a chair leg, baton or a bat. They came in and went straight to a table of white guys and whoever stood up or got in the way, they got walloped.?

He said business inside Ashford House has taken a blow from the weekend violence.

"It was a ghost town in here on Sunday,? Winston said. He said?customers have been afraid to come in?and others have canceled their reservations. He said a few loyal patrons have stopped by to see if everything was OK.

US relatives pleased at Lockerbie bomber's death

The United States said Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi's death in Libya on Sunday ends an unfortunate chapter over his release, but relatives of American victims welcomed the news.

Megrahi, 60, who was suffering from prostate cancer died shortly after 1 pm (1100 GMT), almost three years after he was freed from a Scottish jail on compassionate grounds in a hugely controversial political decision.

The explosion that downed Pan Am flight 103, which was bound for New York, above Lockerbie, killed all 259 passengers -- 189 of them Americans -- and 11 people on the ground on December 21, 1988.

Susan Cohen, whose daughter Theodora was one of the victims, said Megrahi did not deserve the comfort of dying with relatives at his side.

"He deserved to die," Cohen, who lives in New Jersey, told CNN. "He was a mass murderer. I feel no pity around him. He got to die with his family around him. My daughter, at age 20, died a brutal, horrible death."

Barbara Zwynenburg of West Nyack, New York, whose 29-year-old son Mark died aboard the plane, told CNN on Sunday: "It's about time. I'm glad he's dead."

Megrahi was sentenced to life in prison but was released in 2009, a decision that angered victims families and caused a rift between Scotland's devolved government in Edinburgh and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond, relying on doctors' who said Megrahi probably had three months to live, allowed him to travel home to Libya where he was welcomed as a hero, further fueling the row over his release.

On Sunday, US National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said Megrahi's death "concludes an unfortunate chapter following his release from prison in 2009 on medical grounds -- a move we strongly opposed."

Vietor said President Barack Obama's administration was now working for a full accounting of the "horrific acts" of late Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi, who was in power when the bombing took place.

Bert Ammerman, whose 36-year-old brother Tommy died in the blast above the southern Scottish town, said he was "pleased and relieved," Megrahi was dead.

"This man was responsible for blowing people out of the air at 39,000 feet," Ammerman told Fox News, reminding viewers that some of the victims suffered by being alive the entire time that the aircraft plummeted to the ground.

"When he was released, that was the most angry I was in the 24-year saga," he said. "That was a despicable act."

The reaction from US families notably differed from Jim Swire, the father of a British victim of the bombing who campaigned for Megrahi's release believing him to be innocent, who said he felt sad over the bomber's death.

"I have been satisfied for some years that this man was nothing to do with the murder of my daughter," Swire said.

"Scotland has a big question to answer as to why his verdict hasn't long since been reviewed," he told BBC Television.

A Scottish court sitting in the Netherlands convicted Megrahi of the bombing which sent debris from the jet raining down on Lockerbie, a town of only a few thousand people situated around 110 kilometers (70 miles) south of Edinburgh.

British Prime Minister David Cameron rejected calls for an inquiry into the conviction, but told reporters at a NATO summit in Chicago on Sunday that he had "always been clear he should never have been released."

"This has been thoroughly gone through. There was a proper process, a proper court proceeding and all the rest of it," Cameron, whose Conservative Party was in opposition when Megrahi was freed from jail.

"I'm very clear that the court case was properly done and properly dealt with. Today is a day to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act," Cameron added.

But Scottish leader Salmond argued that Megrahi's death vindicated his administration -- which can make decisions on justice matters independently of the British government.

Megrahi's death "puts to rest some of the conspiracy theories which have attempted to suggest that his illness was somehow manufactured -- today's news confirms what we have always said about his medical condition," Salmond said.

Usage of used Floatation Plant and used mine host motors

Mines are the richest source of minerals and here it is to get the benefits and the productivity on a high trend. Here the management team is using various resources like the Used Floatation Plant and used mine host motors. The floatation plant that is manufactured near the mine can be used for various purposes. Sometimes it is while separating the minerals there is need for large volumes of water and here pure water that is free of debris is very essential. But it is now-a-days all the water sources are very much rich with the waste and so these are used to clean the water.

Generally these USED Floatation Plant and used mine host motors are very efficient in doing the required at a very economical budget. Generally these plants are near to a river or a source of water. This great unit is very productive in producing tons of concrete and at the end gives a productive profit.

Working all round the week helps it makes a superb progress in the work. The importance of the plant is very much understood as they take the product obtained from it and test for every hour. Lastly they will be deciding over the quality per day. Thus the entire success of the industry mainly depends on the floatation plant.

The old plants consume very less energy and have a very good air absorption facility. Besides all these the separation of the minerals and as well other substances are done with the help of this in a very best manner. The motors that are mentioned in the above para?s are used for helping the workers in the mine by lifting various goods. Thus it is with less consumption of energy various things can be done. It is for these reasons all the people who ought to buy these old products are very much careful in looking all the factors.

To be in detail all USED mine host motors are of various types. Few of them are the zinc and lead floatation plant and as well copper nickel ore floatation plant. The core principle of this is one and the same, however depending on the minerals they need the functionalities may vary in a small range. Thus in the process of mining industry these floatation plants and as well the mine host motors are used to serve various purposes.

Special Education for All? ? Joanne Jacobs

Caveat: I?m writing this on the fly, so excuse me if my thoughts drift or have a general incoherence.

I?ve had some experience with UDL, particularly as it is presented to those who are training to be teachers. I?ve seen it at work in classrooms, and I?m generally of the belief that it?s seriously flawed in two ways because of assumptions it makes that are questionable.

First, there is the belief that everyone?s learning is different ? that learning is like ?fingerprints?. This is probably literally true, in the sense that my learning is my learning, and your learning is yours. The phenomena of our learnings are numerically distinct, and probably have some minor cosmetic differences, just like fingerprints. But fingerprints (for the most part) are functionally interchangeable when it comes to their actual deployment: gripping things. Saying that everyone?s learning is different is not the same as saying that there are, in each and every person, differences that are relevant to teaching.

In fact, we (humans) learn in very predictable ways. That?s not to say that there may not be some broadly functional distinctions to be made between various types of student; but it is to say that the vision of every single student as relevantly unique is false.

Second, and perhaps more importantly, UDL confounds ?opportunities? for learning with ?results of learning.? Now, from a certain point of view, this makes sense. I can be said to have an equal opportunity to become an NBA all-star when compared to Kobe Bryant; we both can show up to try-outs and give it our all. But from another perspective, I don?t have an equal opportunity, because I do not get to possess the same sort of natural athletic gifts that Bryant has.

The thinking that underlies this is really what I consider to be the most serious flaw in Kantian-Rawlsian thinking: the notion that what matters to people?s identity is some kernel of disembodied rationality, and will a sort of volitional homunculus that is the self and upon which get draped contingent rainments like one?s body, one?s talents, one?s social position, etc.

The UDL framework makes the same sort of assumption about students: that the various levels of intelligence, the various levels of motivation, background knowledge, self-discipline, etc., are all contingencies that are external to the core essence of each student, and that to give each student (read: each disembodied kernel of rationality and human worth) an equal opportunity, the various barriers that arise from their contingent characteristics should be swept away.

To have an equal opportunity for learning, in other words, is to be in a situation that is structured such that the results of the educational process depend solely on will. And even that is abstracted away to a certain degree, with the view that ?engagement? and ?motivation? influences the operation of the will and that the environment should be set up to remove any barriers to choosing to learn.

Finally ? and this isn?t a third assumption, but a terrible mistake that proceeds from the first two flawed assumptions ? UDL ends up abstracting the learning process to the point of futility. This is somewhat similar to your point about how UDL will end up teaching different content, but not exactly the same. Let me see if I can explain what I mean by example.

UDL is very concerned with how educators set up the learning objectives for their students, and pushes an approach that (they say) gets to the important heart of what is really desired: learning. Here?s an example of how UDL sets itself apart from its perceived opponents (who may or may not really exist):

Traditional Learning Goal: Students will read the chapter on the Agricultural Revolution and will write, in cursive, a 200-word report about its technological innovations.

UDL Goal: Students will learn and present information about the technological innovations underlying the Agricultural Revolution.

UDL, its proponents argue, dismisses the sorts of arcane trappings that normally accompany learning goals and instead focuses on the pure, generalized goal of learning and demonstration through whatever methods will work best for each individual student.

This sounds great, right? I mean, who doesn?t want to get right down to the essence of what?s important and pursue it directly?

But UDL makes the same mistake with content that it makes with human nature: the goal of the ?traditional? lesson isn?t just to teach some facts about the agricultural revolution. The goal of the traditional lesson is to develop certain particular, deployed capacities in the students. Indeed, on some views, the capacities are primary, and the transmission of knowledge about the Agricultural Revolution is completely secondary to the process.

UDL views the following as ?barriers? that exist in the Traditional assignment above:

* Some students may have difficulty with cursive handwriting

* Some students may not be able to effectively organize their thoughts and put them on paper to create a report of this length.

But writing in cursive and learning to organize one?s thoughts on paper are part of what is sought to be taught!

That?s not to say that a UDL educator doesn?t want to teach skills, but the UDL philosophy more or less forces educators to fragment the curriculum, rather than integrating it. Every piece of knowledge, every skill, every task, is broken down and presented atomically, stripped to its fundamentals to allow a maximally effective transmission of that particular kernel to each of the various individual learners. It?s highly analytical, and so it appeals to the underlying philosophical commitments described above.

But it?s no way to teach a person how to flourish in a society. It?s great if you?re programming a computer ? or a disembodied kernel of rationality and will. But when you?re teaching people you need to integrate, to turn things into combined exercises. Learning about the agricultural revolution just isn?t that important on its own ? even if it does get its own heading in the state standards. It?s not really the primary goal of the lesson, and to treat it as if it is is to make a serious error.

I?ve gone on long enough, so I?ll stop here.

HBT: Morrow dominates Mets in 3-hit shutout

The Mets were particularly vulnerable this afternoon with David Wright out of the starting lineup and Blue Jays? right-hander Brandon Morrow took advantage, tossing a complete game three-hit shutout as part of a 2-0 victory.

Morrow struck out eight and walked one while throwing 76 out of 107 pitches for strikes. The Mets nearly had a rally going after Scott Hairston led off the ninth inning with a walk and Mike Baxter ripped one down the first base line for a potential double, but Jose Bautista made a quick throw from right field and shortstop Yunel Escobar slapped down the tag at second base. While replays showed that Escobar missed the tag on Baxter, second base umpire Brian Knight called him out. Oh, human element. Daniel Murphy then lined out to Escobar for the final out of the ballgame.

It was the second shutout of the season for Morrow, which leads the majors, and the third of his career. The 27-year-old right-hander is now 5-1 on the year with an outstanding 2.63 ERA and 54/17 K/BB ratio in 61 2/3 innings over nine starts.

The Jays have now won four straight, including two wins against the Yankees and two against the Mets, and sit at 23-18 on the young season.

Gulf Finance House obtains approval for its Sukuk Restructuring ...

As part of the new terms agreed, the repayment of the Sukuk will be extended over the next six years. The restructuring will help pave the way to significantly bolster the asset liability management (ALM) position of the bank and accelerate business growth.

More than 92% of the Sukuk holders voted in an Extra-ordinary General Meeting (EGM), held at the bank's offices on 15 May 2012, of which 100% voted in favor of the new terms. The GFH Sukuk will mature in June 2018 and will also provide GFH a 2 year grace period for the principal repayment amount in 2012 and 2013. Liquidity Management Centre and KPMG acted as Advisors for this transaction.

Commenting on the announcement, Mr Hisham Alrayes, Acting Chief Executive Officer of GFH said, "With the approval to restructure GFH's Sukuk, we are now in a better position to accelerate growth initiatives for the future. We are targeting to extend the maturities of our debt over a longer term to retain our key assets. The restructuring of the GFH Sukuk is an extremely positive development for the Bank, and will enhance the bank's balance sheet significantly. I would like to thank our creditors for their confidence in the bank and the management team by voting to restructure our facility.

Adding his comments on the restructuring of the GFH Sukuk, Mr. Ahmed Abbas, Chief Executive Officer of the Liquidity Management Centre said: "This deal represents one of the most successful restructuring deals that we have worked on. The unanimous approval of the new terms by the Bank's Sukuk holders is a reflection of their confidence in GFH, and is recognition of GFH's commitment to its Sukuk holders. We look forward to working on future projects with GFH, and supporting them in their business growth.

Google bots learning to read webpages like humans, one step closer to knowing everything

Google bots now read webpages more like humans, one step closer to knowing everything

Google just launched its Knowledge Graph, a tool intended to deliver more accurate information by analyzing the way users search. Of course, with a desire to provide better search results comes a need for improved site-reading capabilties. JavaScript and AJAX have traditionally put a wrench in Google bots' journey through a webpage, but it looks like the search engine has developed some smarter specimens. While digging through Apache logs, a developer spotted evidence that bots now execute the JavaScript they encounter -- and rather than just mining for URLS, the crawlers seem to be mimicking how users click on objects to activate them. That means bots can dig deeper into the web, accessing databases and other content that wasn't previously indexable. Looks like Google is one step closer to success on its quest to know everything.

Simple DIY Home Improvement Suggestions | Oak Homes

Article by Erick Corrales

Making the Right Choice With DIY Home Improvement

It can be very satisfying to complete DIY home improvement projects. Not only is it less expensive than hiring someone to do the job, but you can take pride in the fact that you?ve done it all on your own. While this can be rewarding, it?s important to make sure you?re truly ready and qualified to take on any home repairs or improvements before starting. The purpose of this article is to provide you with some guidelines for finding success with your DIY home improvement projects.

One of the most crucial areas to consider with any type of home repairs, renovations or decorating is your budget. It?s essential that you figure out the estimated cost before you begin any work. You should always assume that the actual cost is going to be more than what you first estimate, by at least 10%. That?s simply the way it usually works. There are almost always unexpected reasons why a project is going to cost more than you think. You may need more materials than you thought, you might make a mistake that has to be corrected, or you might discover an additional problem that needs to be addressed. Before starting anything ambitious, check to make sure your home insurance covers any damage that occurs during home repairs.

While it?s admirable that you want to do your own home improvements, don?t be stubborn or proud and try to do something that?s best left to a professional. This is particularly true when it comes to tasks that could turn out to be very costly or even dangerous if you make a mistake. Taking on a major plumbing project, for example, when you have no experience in this area could result in a burst pipe, which could cause a huge amount of damage. Electrical wiring is another area where you should not mettle unless you have the proper qualifications. It really comes down to your own level of experience, which you should be honest with yourself about. DIY home improvement is great if you have the know-how to proceed.

Flooring is an area that now gives you quite a few options for DIY projects. There are several possibilities for putting in new floors that aren?t very expensive and that anyone can do. Laminate wood floors, for example, are something you can install even if you?ve never done anything like this before. The pieces snap together and there?s no need to refinish the surface. While not as sturdy as more expensive materials, this can still give your home an attractive look if you want new floors. Another option for floors is vinyl, which is available in many different styles and colors. Installing vinyl is quite simple, as you can get tiles with self-adhesive backing.

There are many reasons why you may want to embark on a home improvement project. You may want to make some overdue repairs, give yourself more room by adding an addition or simply give your home a fresh look. Either way, if you get the right tools and materials and follow the necessary steps, there?s no reason why your DIY home improvement project won?t be a success.

SEATTLE - Like many of us, Souma Yabuki was rocked by the images from northeast Japan on March 11, 2011.? Instead of just watching the destruction, Souma wanted to be part of the solution.

"I just kind of look at it like what if I was in the tsunami... what if I lost my home,? he said.

So the then 3rd grader from Tops school in Seattle turned to his classmate aria to set up a fundraising drive.

"I didn't want to make people give up so much of their allowance but the Tops community was so supportive... that's why we raised so much money,? said Souma

Souma and Aria raised roughly $2,000 and delivered it to PeaceWinds America.

"No matter what the size of the check, it was overwhelming to the people far across the sea,? said Dr. Chuck Aanenson of PeaceWinds.

So on Tuesday, PeaceWinds visited the school to show them how their donation was used. The kids this time were looking at images of hope.

?I think it's really cool that in just a year all that has been fixed,? said Aria.

The money was used to deliver basic necessities to those in temporary shelters and helped revive the fishing industry, which drives the economy in the devastated area.? The students feel their effort to save up their weekly allowances paid off.

"It really worked, and it wasn't spent just on candy. It was really helping people,? said Aria.

And the people of Japan had a chance to give back.? They hand made peace cranes for every student as their way of thanking them for their heartwarming gift.

The children said seeing the pictures inspired them to think about another fundraiser.
?
Relief agencies believe the recovery will take at least five to ten more years.

?Digital divide? Survey Finds 82 Percent of City Households Have ...

The results are in on a survey the City of Minneapolis conducted in January to understand how Minneapolis residents use computers, mobile devices and the Internet to better their daily lives. The survey results show that 82 percent of Minneapolis residents have computers with Internet access at home, but technology access and knowledge gaps still exist with certain demographics of the city. The survey is intended to determine the state of the ?digital divide? in Minneapolis, which is the gap between individuals and groups in their access to information and communication technologies, and their use and knowledge of these technologies.

The City of Minneapolis is taking a leadership role to help community members, the private sector, and groups interested in digital inclusion come together to address the digital divide in Minneapolis. The City will use this survey data to help bring people and organizations together to develop ways to more effectively close the gaps.

The City?s IT vision includes a component for addressing the digital divide. As government, education, health care providers and businesses are using technology to connect more and more with people online, it?s important to ensure that all individuals can participate in the benefits of the digital society. The city?s residents and businesses need to be equipped to effectively compete with others around the world ?to be smarter, more creative, more knowledgeable, and more innovative. Leveraging technology is a necessary ingredient of success.

About 8,800 households received the survey in the mail from National Research Center, Inc., an independent research firm that conducted the survey. Households were selected at random throughout the entire city, with the goal of reaching a diverse cross-section of residents. The City of Minneapolis IT department conducted the survey, with the help of a grant from the Minneapolis Foundation Digital Inclusion Fund,

Survey summary

Overall, Minneapolis residents feel good about technology in the city: they see computers and the Internet as important parts of their lives; they have a computer and Internet access at home; and they access the Internet on a regular basis. Seventy-seven percent of residents feel excellent (11 percent), good (43 percent) or fair (23 percent) about access to technology in Minneapolis.

Minneapolis residents also understand the importance of having computers and Internet access in their lives. Eighty-five percent of respondents said a computer and Internet access at home is essential or very important. While 82 percent of households city-wide have computers with Internet access there are areas of the city where this could be improved. Only 57 percent of Phillips residents and 65 percent of Near North residents reported having Internet access at home. What?s more, 45 percent of African-Americans reported not having a computer at home and 25 percent said they do not have Internet access at home.? Age and income are key factors in resident?s access and use of technology. Residents age 55 and older and those with household income less than $25,000 are least likely to use computers and the Internet.

Beyond having access to technology, people need to understand how to use it to effectively achieve their educational, economic, civic and social goals. City residents overall have a high comfort level when using technology for basic activities, however there are opportunities to improve skills in the areas of searching and applying for jobs online, cyber security, and using the Internet for community resources and civic engagement. The survey shows 91 percent are either very comfortable or somewhat comfortable using a computer or laptop; 92 percent are either very comfortable or somewhat comfortable accessing the Internet; and 92 percent very comfortable or somewhat comfortable using email.

Results from the survey show 51 percent of respondents said they are very comfortable, and 20 percent somewhat comfortable finding and applying for jobs online. Survey results also show that 68 percent of respondents are very comfortable or somewhat comfortable using the Internet to access tutorials or educational programs. Friends and family are also a big resource for residents seeking computer and Internet advice. From a list of potential resources, 59 percent reported they ask their friends and family when they need help with computers or the Internet.

The entire report is on the City?s website. Folks will also be able to use an interactive map to compare neighborhood data to city-wide data.

Help the community bridge the digital divide

City leaders and staff will be hosting a number of community meetings with residents, businesses, community groups, and many other stakeholders to share the survey results and get feedback about how to overcome the digital divide in Minneapolis. The meetings will be held at the following dates and times:

Not to be derailed by the "restricted" bootloader found on its US variant, One X users elsewhere can now potter around kernel version 2.6.39 and its unlocked bootloader. It's the latest release from HTC Dev, which now houses bootloaders for phones as far old as the venerable Dream, and means that the official channel has caught up with its eager modding community. Oracle v Google decision -- the layman's edition

Lady Justice

You probably heard that a partial decision was made in the Oracle versus Google lawsuit this afternoon. Nobody won, nobody lost (except us end-users, who will have to pay for all this somehow), and in reality things have only just begun to get interesting. If you're a lawyer, or pretend to be a lawyer on the Internet, you have plenty of places to get into fancy discussions, using words like discovery and writ, but I'm just here to try to break it down so that the average Joe (or Jane, or Jerry) can get a grasp on what's happening.

This was just the first phase of the trial. Judge Alsup has thrown most of the suit out of court already, leaving two sections to decide  -- 37 Java API's, and their documentation. We'll start with the question about the documentation, because it's easy -- the jury found that Google did not infringe or unfairly take from the documentation. This means that the jury doesn't think that Google read how the code in question works, then stole the idea to do it their way.

The second question being decided today is a bit more muddy. When asked if Oracle had proven that Google "infringed the overall structure, sequence and organization of copyrighted works", they responded yes, that they believe Oracle did prove this point. However, they could not decide if this structure, sequence and organization should be allowed to be patented copyrighted in the first place.  After reaching an impasse several times about the validity of copyright and fair-use, judge Alsup eventually told the jurors to act as if they were able to be copyrighted and will determine the fair use question later.

Phase two now begins, and we expect more (and more) motions, fighting, and money being spent in the coming days and weeks. But what about that fair use question? That's important. If judge Alsup finds that the Java APIs in question, or APIs in general, fall under fair use law then it's all a moot point. Courts in the EU have found that software APIs are not subject to copyright or patent, and all fall under the fair use laws -- meaning it's fair for anyone to use them. Many feel that judge Alsup will rule the same way, and all this was for nothing.

We're not lawyers. We don't pretend to be lawyers, don't play lawyers on TV and didn't even sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night. We're tech nerds, smartphone enthusiasts, and Android fans. All we know is that one group of millionaires is arguing with another group of millionaires about who gets what percentage of our money. Of course, both Google and Oracle claim victory, official statements are after the break. We'll keep an eye on things so you don't have to. Right now, I need an Excedrin and a whiskey sour.

Charlie Sheen Threatens Lawsuit Over Strip Clip VIP Room

Charlie Sheen no longer wants to be associated with strippers.

Unless he's personally associating with them, that is.

The actor is threatening legal action against a Times Square gentlemen's club named Cheetahs because it has set up a VIP room named after the warlock himself. What can one do inside the "Charlie Sheen Room?

Eat sushi of nearly-naked women, of course, while staring at photos on the wall of the former Two and a Half Men star.

Charlie Sheen for FX

"Charlie has nothing to do with this and it is unfortunate that these despicable parasites have not been exterminated," Sheen's rep, Larry Solters, tells E! News in the sort of language that makes us miss Sheen's Korner.

Sam Zherka, president of the parent company that owns Cheetahs, told The New York Post that the roomed was christened a year ago because: “We figured it would be comical to name a room after him. It was a room where you could dine on sushi served on cellophane on the body of one of our entertainers, not where you do crack."

Still, Zherka has received a cease-and-desist letter from Sheen's attorney and has complied with the demand to remove Sheen's name from the joint. He just doesn't understand why.

"How could sushi damage Charlie Sheen’s reputation?" Zherka asks.

comScore: Android tips the 51% mark in US share, iPhone nips its heels with 31%

Image

The March smartphone market share tally for the US is in from comScore, and it paints a familiar picture that's rosy for Apple, Google and Samsung, but not so flush-cheeked for everyone else. Android is still tops and jumped almost four points to 51 percent of new American buyers. Apple's still riding high after shipping 35.1 million iPhones, however, and moved up to 30.7 percent. As is often becoming the case, it was Microsoft and RIM that took the biggest hit, with the BlackBerry dropping as much as Android gained and tumbling down to 12.3 percent.

A total of 106 million Americans had a smartphone, nine percent higher than in December, and that was mirrored in the hurt dealt out among total cellphone market share. Outside of Samsung's gangbuster run in smartphones keeping it on top at 26 percent, the only other company to move up as an individual cellphone brand was Apple, which staked out 14 percent of the US cellphone space for itself. HTC, Motorola and LG are all shedding market share, with HTC no doubt hoping that the One X and One S will turn its fortunes around pretty soon.
